PERSONAL
Judge Maureen Lally-Green is married to Stephen Ross Green, Esq. They have three 3 grown children. Her family is her greatest devotion. The Judge and her husband live in Cranberry Township, Butler County, where they have lived since 1980.
She attended Duquesne University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education (Mathematics). She then attended Duquesne University School of Law where she was a member of the Law Review and earned a Juris Doctor in 1974.
The Judge is also the oldest of eight children. She and her family grew up in Sharpsville, and then, Hermitage, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Her Mother as well as most of her siblings and their families live in the greater Pittsburgh area. She also has a sister who lives with her family in Bryn Mawr.
PROFESSIONAL LIFE
During her 32 years in the legal profession, Judge Lally-Green has had many diverse experiences in the law. See Professional Life
- Experienced lawyer: She has been in private law practice, a lawyer for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, and litigation and corporate counsel for Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
- Law professor (full-time and adjunct) from 1983-present: She has served as a professor of law at Duquesne University School of Law. She has taught there since 1983 in both a full-time (1987-98) and adjunct capacity. Her courses have included, among other, Criminal Law, Employment Discrimination, Labor Law, and Legal Research and Writing.
She is also the author of a number of academic articles which have been published in law reviews both in the United States and in Italy. (See Academic Publications).
- Part-time Consultant to the Supreme Court. During the time she served as a professor of law, she also was a part-time clerk/consultant with two members of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in the late 1980s and during the 1990s.
- Judge of the Superior Court since 1998. She has served for almost 9 years as Judge of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania. In 1998, Governor Tom Ridge nominated her to the Superior Court and the State Senate confirmed her. Then, in 1999, she ran statewide and was elected by the citizens of Pennsylvania to the Superior Court.
- Service to the Supreme Court. The Judge has served the Supreme Court in various roles. She is a member of the Court’s Appellate Procedural Rules Committee. She has also been a member of the Court’s Criminal Procedural Rules Committee and a member of a Disciplinary Hearing Committee of the Disciplinary Board. In addition, the Court has appointed her to the Interbranch Commission on Race, Gender and Ethnic Fairness.
PROFESSIONAL SERVICE
- Extensive Professional Service The Judge has been actively involved in her professional life with both the Allegheny County Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Bar Association. (See Professional and Community Service)
- Frequent Lecturer. In addition, the Judge has been a frequent lecturer and participant in many continuing legal education programs for lawyers as well as a speaker for other groups. (speaking engagements)
- Service that Promotes Fairness in the Legal System. Recently, the Judge has devoted much time to the development of procedures for the courts to use in ensuring fairness those who use the courts. She is Secretary of the Interbranch Commission of Race, Gender and Ethnic Fairness. In addition, she chairs the Commission’s Grievance Committee.
Before that, she served the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania as Chair of the Judicial Council’s Gender (Recommendations) Implementation Subcommittee.
- Service to the Supreme Court that promotes clarity in the rules and procedures that affect the legal system. She is currently a member of the Court’s Appellate Procedural Rules Committee. She has been a member of the Criminal Procedural Rules Committee and of a Disciplinary Hearing Committee of the Disciplinary Board.
